Reading is always believed to be fundamental to the children’s learning and it sure is. Children who read a lot are most likely to become the better writers and readers among their age group.
Do not feel too frustrated if you can’t get them to read like you want them to. Remember that there are many factors that prevent them from doing so. There are a lot of activities that they think that are more enjoyable and beneficial to them such as watching television, playing with the computer, and outdoor activities. However, motivating your children to read can be easy if parents have enough patience to teach young boys and girls the importance of reading.
Determine your children’s interest and from there, buy magazines, books, and posters that are related to those interests. Get them excited by choosing books you know they are interested in. If your boys like cars, you may want to get them books on cars and other vehicles. You can start by buying picture books only. Or if your little girl likes fairies and fantasies, buy fairytale books that you are sure she’ll like.
If your family loves to travel, you may use this as a starting point. Tell your children interesting things about the place and tell them to look up for more information by reading. This may start them to read more if the place you recently visited gave them a lot of wonderful and unforgettable memories.
Choose books that also have movie versions. Start by showing them the movie first then give them the book afterwards. Most children get motivated to read and learn more about the movie they just recently watched.
Read books and magazines to your children. Do not just expect them to read on their own. Some kids appreciate more if their parents read to them. Such may start them to see why reading can be beneficial.
Do not limit your kids to reading books and magazines only. Encourage them to read instructions on the box of their new toy or the cereal box. Leave other reading materials at home. Just make sure that they are all informative and are appropriate for the children. You may get a
childrens bookshelf like the KidKraft Avalon Tall Bookshelf or a Kidkraft Nantucket Toy so baby books, magazines, and other reading materials are always kept organized.
While on a bookstore, you may tell your kids to choose books they want to read. This may encourage them to read because you are showing how special they are by rewarding them with books.
After reading, discuss with them the content of the book, movie, or reading material. Start the conversation and always end by telling them to read books so they’ll know more in the future and about a certain subject.
You may also do activities together that encourage reading. Play games that require reading. Choose any game that involves alphabets, words, and reading instructions so their reading ability is further enhanced.
Motivating kids can be easy if parents understand themselves why reading has such high significance in the life of both children and adults. Do not get tired of getting your kids to read because the rewards in the future are endless. |
